Before you begin, make sure you have the following materials and tools at hand:

  1. ECC81, ECC82, or ECC83 vacuum tubes to be tested.
  2. A simple test circuit consisting of:
    • Two 100K-ohm anode resistors.
    • Two 1K-ohm cathode resistors.
    • A regulated direct current power supply with a current limit of 500 milliamperes.
    • A voltmeter.
    • Wire connections and tube sockets.

Steps for Testing Vacuum Tubes

Now, follow the steps below to perform the test on ECC81, ECC82, or ECC83 tubes:

Step 1: Preparation

Before starting the test, carefully check that all circuit components are properly connected, and ensure that the direct current power supply is switched off.

Step 2: Tube Pin Identification

Identify the pins of the ECC81, ECC82, or ECC83 vacuum tube. Remember that the pins are numbered and counted clockwise from the base of the tube. Make a note of these numbers for future reference.

Step 3: Tube Connection





Ensure that the direct current power supply is switched off. Insert the vacuum tube into the socket with great care to avoid damaging the pins. Connect the wires according to the following standards:

  • Filament: Connect the wires to the filament terminals of the tube.
  • Anode: Connect the wires to the anode terminals of the tube.
  • Cathode: Connect the wires to the cathode terminals of the tube.

With the filament heated, measure the voltage at the anode terminals using a voltmeter. Check the voltage at the cathode using the same voltmeter. Compare the measured voltages with the ideal values for each tube type:

  • ECC83: Approximately 145 volts.
  • ECC82: Approximately 55 volts.
  • ECC81: Approximately 95 volts.

Step 7: Evaluation of Results

Based on the measurements taken, assess the condition of the vacuum tube:

  • If the voltages are within the ideal values, the tube is in good working condition.
  • If the voltages are significantly outside the ideal values, the tube may be faulty and may need replacement.

Step 8: Shutdown and Tube Removal

Switch off the direct current power supply, wait for the filament to cool down, and disconnect the wires from the tube carefully. Use a rubber tube protector when handling the tubes.
